WISDOM IS DEVELOPED BY HUMILITY

WISDOM IS DEVELOPED BY HUMILITY

In the Name of God, The Most Beneficent, The Most Merciful.

“Jesus son of Mary (a.s.) “O assembly of Apostles! I have a request of you. Fulfill it for me.”

They said, “Your request is fulfilled, O Spirit of God!” Then he stood up and washed their feet. They said, “It would have been more proper for us to have done this, O Spirit of God!”

Jesus son of Mary (a.s.) said:

“Surely it is more fitting for a scholar to serve the people. I humbled myself only so that you may humble yourselves among the people after me, just as I humbled myself among you.”

Then Jesus son of Mary (a.s.) said:

“Wisdom is developed by humility, not by pride, just as plants grow from soft soil and not from rock.”

[Al-Kafi, Volume 1]

Humility is something that the Prophets (as) no doubt taught us. Humility is something we all need to have as human beings. Sometimes the heart and pulses can feel hard after a time when we have lived as arrogant human beings on earth. Undoubtedly, Spirituality influences the heart, nerves and organs of the body. When anger and arrogance pulsate through the veins, as a human, you directly feel its effects.

Let’s ask ourselves as Muslims and as human beings: How many of us had been ready to wash the feet of another human being?

It may be an easy question, but when it comes to practice, reality looks different. Many of today’s people do not want to descend to the soft and humble earth. The majority want to continue to stand above the hard rock and believe that they control the world, while they are not even an atom compared to the universe, when it comes to the world of quantity.

We who follow our Prophets (as) and our Imams (as) should be humble teachers for our students. We must represent humility. We must be mature enough to serve our own people without the intent of ostentation. One should always strive for what makes one humbler and avoid that which makes one more arrogant. Reflect on your lifestyle, what makes you humbler and what makes you more arrogant?

Any person can have a lot of knowledge but can also be very arrogant. Many individuals in today’s world have a lot of knowledge, but at the same time are very arrogant. Only the wise know the sweetness of humility, and this is where we talk about quantity (knowledge) and quality (wisdom).

Peace and Blessings be upon Prophet Muhammad (saw) and his Progeny (as)
