THE REMEMBRANCE OF THE CREATOR (ذكر الخالق)
In the Name of God, The Most Beneficent, The Most Merciful.
It was narrated from Asma’ bint Yazid that she heard the Messenger of God (ﷺ) say:
“Shall I not tell you of the best of you?” They said: “Yes, O Messenger of God.” He said: “The best of you are those who, when they are seen, God the Mighty, the Majestic, is remembered.”
[Sunan Ibn Majah, 4119]
Imam Ali (ع) said, ‘The one who occupies himself with the remembrance of God, God beautifies his remembrance [among people].’
[Ghurar al-Hikam, no. 5235]
Experts estimate that the mind thinks between 60,000-80,000 thoughts a day. The Human being thinks all the time. We live in a world where depression and suicide have increased significantly. Reflect on the reasons behind this mental epidemic that has swept over the materialistic world. Man is not at peace with himself.
The human being always tries to impress other people and strive for the materialistic and the temporary. Do not strive for the temporary when you have a God who is As-Samad (الصمد), The All-Eternal. Stop filling yourself with thoughts of self-presentation and self-impression, while God will beautify your remembrance among people if you are a man of remembrance (ذكر الله).
The Prophets (as) and the Imams (as) still live in the hearts of humans, because they were the men of God. They will live on as eternal role models and examples for us ordinary people who are not flawless.
Fill your heart with the remembrance of God and His beautiful names. Let every part of your body be connected to your heart which you should fill with the remembrance of God. Remind yourself how the best people on earth lived and how they remembered God in every single second. Today, they live forever. Become like those whom God chose over the worlds, and God will never erase your eternal memory in the hearts of humanity.
Imam Al-Baqir (as) said, ‘It is written in the Torah: ‘…O Moses… remember Me in times of loneliness and when enjoying your pleasures and I will remember you in your times of negligence.’
[Amali al-Saduq, p. 210, no. 6]
Imam Ali (as) said, ‘Remembrance is a source of great pleasure for the lovers [of God].’
[Ghurar al-Hikam, no. 670]
The true pleasure is not to remember the material and the worldly. The true pleasure lies in the heart that constantly remembers God. This heart will never die. A man whose soul always strives toward God will never die. There is life and happiness in that which draws man closer to God.
Today in our communities, we have heartless humans. A man whose heart does not have God, has no heart. Muslims today have reached a terrible level of heartlessness. The system is fully utilized. Today, you are willing to earn and spend money on that which is forbidden. A heart that is ready to earn that which is forbidden, does not have God. A heart that enjoys the good without having piety, does not really enjoy the good. That heart does understand true joy. Even when it comes to women and marriage, you should have the intention to enjoy the good with a heart of piety and with a heart of remembrance.
A man who marries a woman and treats her like a sex object has no piety in his heart. A Muslim should have God and love in his heart, even if you do not have strong feelings for that woman. You should still treat her like a queen.
Today you have Muslims exploiting women in the name of Islam. The temporary marriage and Misyar marriage have been used to satisfy one’s desires and not to satisfy God.
As I mentioned, even if you do not have strong feelings for a woman, you should still treat her like a queen when you are with her. You should treat her with love and respect. Keep in mind that you have a mother and maybe sisters. You don’t want them to be treated as sex objects. God created us human beings with love, so how can we not long for love?
If you have God in your heart, you will always feel the pleasure in this world and in the hereafter. Always remember to always be in a state of remembrance in your life, and people around you will long to be around you. That said, the goal of remembering God is first and foremost to draw closer to God. As you get closer to God, you should try to get others to come closer to God as well.
Imam Ali (as) said, ‘Remembrance of God is the natural disposition of every good-doer and the distinguishing mark of every believer.’
[Ghurar al-Hikam, no. 5173]
Imam Ali (as) said, ‘The one whose heart thrives with the continuous remembrance of God, his actions will always be good whether done in secret or openly.’
[Ghurar al-Hikam, no. 8872]
Every good doer is a true rememberer of God. Only the good who really has a goodness of quality in him, remembers God constantly. Anyone who remembers God will always come closer to goodness. If you want to reach a high spiritual level of goodness and faith, you should always remember God in your heart and in your actions. Whether you are in private or public situations. Alone or with people. The names of God must always pulse within every heartbeat.
Thoughts are important. Your actions reflect your thoughts and intentions. If you have thoughts of evil, then it is no wonder that your actions and intentions are evil. If you have thoughts of goodness, then it is no wonder that your actions and intentions are good. We as Muslims, must believe that God is the source of all good. We must stop relying on people, and we must begin to rely on God. Remember God, and God will fill yourself with faith (Iman) and goodness.
The Prophet (saw) said, ‘The one who remembers [God] in the midst of the neglectful ones is as one who fights [in the way of God] in the midst of others who flee [from the battle].’
[Makarim al-Akhlaq, v. 2, p. 373, no. 2661]
The Prophet (saw) said, ‘Everyone will die thirsty except the one who remembers God.’
[Bihar Al-Anwar, v. 81, p. 240, no. 26]
In our busy world, it’s hard to remember God. We who live in the secular and atheist world here in Northern Europe, we see a development of materialism in Western society. Even Muslims have become completely captivated by this materialistic culture that has swept over the society we live in. Muslims today are not as passionate about their faith as they were 100-200 years ago.
The Industrialization and materialism have really affected both Muslims and non-Muslims to such an extent that religion has become a culture that must be followed for the sake of their parents and that they (the parents) should be respected by their sons and daughters for following their (the parents) customs and traditions. Obviously, the culture of their parents will occupy much of their remembrance if the religion is only followed culturally and emotionally. It is important that religion is followed intellectually and spiritually.
Remember that you will never quench your thirst if you follow this destructive and blind path. Be a true soldier of God who truly remembers God in a society of heedlessness and negligence. Be a true soldier of God who always remembers God and continues to remain in the battlefield of the spiritual jihad. You will then be counted as one of those who fight alone while the people around you flee from the remembrance of truth.
Be a light of goodness and inspiration between the people who live in darkness, and God will make you a wasilah that leads to him. A true Wali of God is one who leads his brother or sister in faith or humanity from the world of evilness to the path of God. A true friend is one who upon seeing a fault gives you advice and who defends you in your absence.
Peace and Blessings be upon Prophet Muhammad and His Family (as)
